Holder.js is a client side image placeholders. It is a downloadable application that renders image placeholders entirely in browser using SVG.

It uses a custom font that are rendered using canvas by default. But if you need to render a SVG holder using an externally loaded font, you will need to use the object tag instead of the img tag and add a holderjs class to the appropriate link tags.
