Wireguard

i came across wireguard a few years back and it was a bit clunky and raw then but it seems like it's really picked up the development pace over the last few years, mainly because openvpn had all those issues and people started looking at alternative protocols.

WireGuard® is an extremely simple yet fast and modern VPN that utilizes state-of-the-art cryptography. It aims to be faster, simpler, leaner, and more useful than IPSec, while avoiding the massive headache. It intends to be considerably more performant than OpenVPN

this is looking pretty solid now and if you can be bothered to set it up you can find a bunch of VPN services that will host the connection/profile for you, worth setting up for sure!
