System 001

Launched on September 8, 2018 from San Francisco, System 001 intends to prove the concept of The Ocean Cleanup's technology in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the world's largest accumulation zone of ocean plastics - situated halfway between Hawaii and California.

HOW IT WORKS

System 001 takes advantage of natural oceanic forces to catch and concentrate plastic. Natural forces move the system faster than plastic, allowing plastic to get concentrated and trapped.

Construction

It consists of a 600m long floater that floats and a tapered 3m deep skirt attached below.
