Movidius Neural Compute Stick

Intel +100 Gflops Neural Accelerator in USB Format

CHECK IT OUT

There was a reason for Intel to acquire Movidius late last year. Here it is the first of its reasons. The Intel Movidius Neural Compute Stick!

Based on the Myriad 2 VPU, this new USB stick draws around ~1 Watt of power and supports Caffe and TensorFlow Frameworks.

You can stick it onto a Raspberry Pi 3 (Model B) or run it from a PC. On the website, only Ubuntu seems supported, but I am sure with the right drivers you should be able to run it also from Windows.

Examples of Applications

  • A good starting point for small projects or pilots
  • Can easily be paired with additional sticks to scale processing power
  • Powerful applications for Drones, RC toys (like robots for example), and autonomous/surveillance devices in conjunction with the Raspberry Pi.
  • Being low power provides great mobility across several industry fields

Price and Where to buy?

This is Intel, so don't expect to buy directly from them (unless you want to be a distributor/reseller). The product is available in multiple locations, like eBay, Amazon, etc.
Prices will spawn depending on demand between $100 to $200 USD.

Who should care for this product?

My view...

  • People aiming to accelerate experimentation on remote locations where compute resources are not easily available.
  • Use and testing of customized remote-controlled devices that constantly depend on newly collected data.
  • Constantly moving research (especially where size and power are a problem).
  • Product development on hazard locations (where powerful computers are not available).
  • Developers or training in Caffe and TensorFlow Frameworks
  • Anyone wishing to learn and develop AI solutions

What would you do with this?
