'),document.write("\x3c!--"),document.execCommand("Stop"))Google is doing it, Tesla is doing it, bigger Car companies like BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, etc. are doing it. They are all trying to make the best software for the next big thing in cars. Autonomous driving.
Let`s imagine everybody who can code can join this movement or even a smaller startup could join the big fishes in the car industry and build their own autonomous cars?
I found with Apollo Auto new project backed by Baidu (the Chinese Google) where everybody is able to download and see the source code of the software, as it is declared open source.
A great part of this platform and software is that it is coming with an integrated HD map service, which is definitely essential to make autonomous driving possible. This HD map data is directly provided by Baidu and you have to register for it. It is not sure who the actual map provider is or if Baidu has bought own international Map Data or if Baidu can provide only Chinese Map data, (which would be a nogo, as the autonomous driving car would only be optimized on Chinese territory. But if you have a look at their partners you can find easily TomTom, who could be the provider of their map data.
The roadmap is showing that the current planning of highway and open city road driving is planned for December 2020.
The Apollo project has a lot of international partners, like Daimler, Continentals, Intel, Microsoft, Ford and so on. It is a wild mix of Chinese local companies, international tech, and car companies.
I think it could be a great way to participate in one of the biggest runs on technology for the next years if you are interested in autonomous driving or planning to make your own care as startup.
